About FairTab
FairTab keeps the running tab for a trip, a shared house, or a night out, then works out the shortest set of payments that settles everyone up. Add the people sharing the cost, log each expense as it happens, and the balances update as you go, so no one has to reconstruct who paid for what at the end of the weekend.
It runs entirely in your browser with no login and no app for anyone in the group. Splits can be equal, by exact amount, by percentage, or by shares, and every total is figured in whole cents so the balances always add up. Export a group to JSON or CSV whenever you want a copy or want to move it to another device.
How it works
- Add everyone sharing the costs under Participants, using first names or nicknames.
- Log each cost under Add expense: who paid, how much, and how it should be split.
- Pick a split type per expense: equal, exact amounts, percentages, or shares.
- Read the Balances panel to see who is up and who is down across all expenses.
- Open the settle-up summary for the shortest list of who pays whom, then copy it into your group chat.
Worked examples
Three roommates, 1,200 rent, one card
One person pays the landlord and logs it as an equal split, so FairTab shows the other two each owe 400.
Weekend trip, mixed payers
Everyone covers a few costs along the way, and the settle-up plan clears all the balances in as few transfers as possible.
Dinner split by shares
Two people share a large plate while one orders alone, and share-based splitting charges each person their portion without manual math.

- Do I or my friends need an account or app to use it?
- No. FairTab runs in your browser with no login and no app install for anyone. You add people by name, so the people you are splitting with do not need to sign up or download anything.
- Is there a daily limit on expenses?
- No. You can add as many expenses as you want with no daily cap, cooldown, or upgrade prompt in the way of getting the math done.
- Where is my data stored?
- Everything stays in your browser using local storage. Your groups, names, and amounts are never uploaded to a server. You can export a group to JSON or CSV any time to keep a copy or move it to another device.
- How are uneven splits calculated?
- FairTab supports equal, exact-amount, percentage, and share-based splits. All math is done in whole cents, and any leftover cent is assigned in a fixed order so each expense and the final balances always add up exactly.
- How does settle up work?
- FairTab computes each person's balance, then produces a short list of who pays whom that clears every balance with as few transfers as possible. You can copy the summary as plain text to paste into a group chat.
