HSA Contribution Room Checker

See how much room you have left in your 2026 HSA

Employer contributions count against the same annual limit, so both amounts are included.

Select your coverage type and enter your contributions to see your remaining 2026 HSA room.

About the HSA contribution room checker

The HSA contribution room checker shows how much you can still contribute to your health savings account for 2026. Pick your high-deductible health plan coverage type, say whether you are 55 or older, and enter what you and your employer have already contributed this year. The tool returns your remaining contribution room for the year.

For 2026 the IRS annual HSA limit is $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, and people 55 or older who are not enrolled in Medicare can add a $1,000 catch-up. Employer contributions count against the same limit, so both are subtracted. This is a planning estimate, not tax or financial advice. Special situations such as mid-year coverage changes, Medicare enrollment, and the last-month rule can change your limit, so confirm with your HSA custodian or a tax professional. The result panel links to IRS Publication 969.

Worked examples

Self-only, under 55, $1,000 contributed: about $3,400 of room left

The 2026 self-only limit is $4,400, so $4,400 minus $1,000 leaves roughly $3,400 to contribute.

Family, age 55+, $5,000 from you and $1,500 from your employer: about $3,250 left

The family limit is $8,750 plus the $1,000 catch-up, so $9,750 minus $6,500 leaves about $3,250.

Self-only, $4,400 already contributed: $0 room left

When contributions reach the limit, remaining room is zero, and going over can trigger an excise tax.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2026 HSA contribution limits?
For 2026 the IRS annual HSA contribution limit is $4,400 for self-only high-deductible health plan coverage and $8,750 for family coverage. These figures come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-19 and apply to the full 2026 calendar year.
Does the age-55 catch-up change my limit?
Yes. If you are 55 or older during 2026 and not enrolled in Medicare, you can contribute an extra $1,000 catch-up on top of the standard limit. The tool adds this $1,000 when you choose the 55-or-older option. The catch-up amount is set in statute and is not adjusted for inflation.
Do employer contributions count against my HSA limit?
Yes. The annual HSA limit covers all contributions to the account, including any your employer makes. That is why the tool subtracts both your contributions and your employer contributions from the limit when it shows your remaining room.
What happens if I go over the limit?
Contributing more than the annual limit can create an excess contribution that may be subject to a 6 percent excise tax until it is corrected. Removing the excess and any earnings before your tax-filing deadline can help avoid the tax. Confirm the correct steps with your HSA custodian or a tax professional.
Is this calculator tax or financial advice?
No. It is a planning estimate based on the published IRS 2026 HSA limits. It assumes you are HSA-eligible for all of 2026 under one coverage type. Mid-year coverage changes, Medicare enrollment, and the IRS last-month rule can change your actual limit, so confirm your numbers before you act.
Does the tool store the numbers I enter?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The tool does not collect your name, Social Security number, account numbers, payroll records, or any contribution data, and it does not save the values you enter.
